JOHN DIES AT THE END by DAVID WONG

Here is another mad book I think you all should read (if you haven't already). JOHN DIES AT THE END is kind of a BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE meets GHOSTBUSTERS kind of romp. It's a couple of fools saving the world thing.

I really enjoyed it. It's very over the top but Wong (a pseudonym for Jason Pargin, who writes for Cracked.com) plays it that way from start to finish. It's crude, rude and full of attitude. And funny as hell in parts.

If there is one complaint that I have it's that the book is a little over-long. It clocks in at around 460 pages and that, in my opinion, is about a hundred pages too much for the story told here. The epilogue is forty something pages long, for goodness sake!

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this sucker. I've invested a freaking fortunes worth on the dang thing. I purchased the original release from Permuted Press and then the hardcover when it was picked up by Thomas Dunne Books. Then I had to have the new trade version because I kinda dig that cover (the image used for the movie poster). For whatever reason, the past five or six times I tried getting into it I couldn't. This time I did. And as I said above I really enjoyed it.

And yes, the movie is out there and I've heard it's quite good. It's directed by Don Coscarelli who made PHANTASM (all of them) and BUBBA HO-TEP. I have heard it's available to watch on iTunes but have not been able to find it (I think it's a border thing). It's out in select theatres in select cities.

Anyway, the book comes highly recommended from this book lover. It's not for everyone, but if you like crazy assed, over-the-top, hair brained horror, you are going to like this. Check it out!

  1. I'm reading it now and really digging it. Though yeah, it does seem to go on a bit long. I'm about 60% into it and wondering just how much more there can be.

  2. I heard about this one a couple years ago, but slipped off my radar. Then I heard a couple weeks ago there was a film adaptation. Guess that means I better read the book--and soon.
