Two terrific movies. Two totally different movies. Two movies you should check out in the theatres if you get the chance.
JACK REACHER is the action packed thriller staring Tom Cruise as the titular character, whose job it becomes to track down and bring his own brand of hard justice to a sonofabitch sniper. While the opening scenes are rather difficult to watch, given the recent events of gun violence south of the the border, the rest of the film (especially a loud and wicked cool car chase) make this a totally awesome, high octane thriller.
I am man enough to admit that Tom Cruise is one of my favourite actors. I'm sorry, but it's true. He's been in too many films that I love for him not to be a fav. TAPS. THE OUTSIDERS. RISKY BUSINESS. LEGEND. A FEW GOOD MEN. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. JERRY MAGUIRE. The MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movies and more. Sure, there isn't much of a stretch in character from movie to movie but he's never playing a character that really requires more than what he has to deliver, so it's all good in my books.
JACK REACHER also stars David Oyelowo. This the first film I've seen him in and he was terrific. Can't wait to see more of this bright young actor. Also in the film is the delightfully creepy Werner Herzog and (a guy who I see having a big action star career ahead of him) Jai Courtney (see him next in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD).
ARGO is a film by a dude I wish I could sit down and have coffee with some time. I would love to just shoot the shit with Ben Affleck about films and books and comics.
This is the third film Affleck has directed (he's also the star) after the terrific GONE BABY GONE and THE TOWN. The film is a political thriller that centres around some of the events of the Iran hostage crisis and the attempt to rescue six American hostages from that country.
ARGO has an all-star cast that includes John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Brian Cranston, Canadian Victor Garber and many others. It's a very intense film but Affleck does a terrific job of character development while keeping things moving. You care about what happens to these people.
Check it out or ARGO fuck yourself! (gotta see the film).

Tom Cruise is a favorite of mine, too. You are not alone. I just started reading the Jack Reacher books. Have you read them? I looked up which book the movie is based on, and apparently it is based on book 9. This could take a while. I'm curious as to whether reading book 9 out of order (or watching the movie I supposed) would spoil anything in the previous books. Books 1 and 2 were pretty stand alone from each other.
