WAYNE OF GOTHAM

Just in time for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES a bit of Batman goodness. Looking forward to picking this one up and giving it a read. Check it out!

Two men separated by murder: Thomas, the rebellious doctor and heir to the vast Wayne empire, and Bruce, his son, whose life is forever altered by witnessing his parents' murder. The slaying of Thomas and Martha Wayne is the torturous point on which Bruce turns to become Batman.
The Dark Knight's file on the case has long been closed, the foundations of Bruce Wayne's secret life secure in the simple genesis of a mugging gone horribly wrong.
These foundations are shaken, however, when an unexpected guest invades the grounds of Wayne Manor, raising questions about the event that ended the lives of the mother he loved and the father he worshipped, and sparked his unquenchable drive to protect and avenge.
To discover his real family history, Batman must face down old foes, his only confidant, and the evil heart of Arkham Asylum, and shoulder the new burden of a dark legacy.

This September ESCAPE FROM HAT!

This one sounds really rad. I can't wait to read it. Check this out:

Escape from Hat tells the epic story of Leek, a particularly lucky rabbit in a particularly unlucky situation. After a fateful magic trick sends Leek tumbling into the land of Hat, the rabbit must find his way through deadly peril back to the boy he is sworn to protect. But the land of Hat belongs to the black cats, whose job it is to spread ill luck to their hapless humans. When Millikin discovers his nemesis, Leek, is wandering through his own backyard, he makes it the top priority of all the cats of Hat to rout out Leek and his companions with the help of their unlucky wits and the terrible destruction of the Dimmer-Dammers. Meanwhile, in the land where there is a sun, the boy Cecil is left without the luck - good or ill - of his unseen companions, Leek and Millikin. On his own journey to retrieve both his rabbit and his luck, Cecil must discover the truth behind the unfortunate magic trick, or face a future without any luck at all. From rickety caravans to sea monsters, the parallel journeys of rabbit and boy are a reminder that love and friendship are the greatest magics of all.

Like I said, I can't wait to read this one. It looks and sounds completely awesome. Pre-order it here!

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (Complete Movie)

Do yourself a favour and gather the kiddos around and watch this amazing Academy Award winning short animated movie directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg.

This is a true ode to book lovers everywhere!

SANTA CALLS

SANTA CALLS, though a little out of season for this time of year, is still a pleasurable read for the kiddos by my new favourite children's book author, William Joyce.

It tells the heart warming tale of a brother and sister and their adventure to the North Pole to visit none other than Santa himself. Before the last page is turned the pair will run into dark elves, an evil queen, fly in Santa's sleigh and much more.

Charming, sweet and also thrilling, SANTA CALLS is a really cool children's book I'm sure you and your kids will enjoy (maybe a little closer to Christmas, but then again, what's wrong with a little Santa magic on a warm summer evening?).

Joyce's accompanying illustrations are terrific. I really am in awe of the imagination and wonderment each picture displays.

Check this one out from your local library today!

NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND THE BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING

One of my favourite books to read in a long time is NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND THE BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING written by the amazing William Joyce and Laura Geringer. Joyce also provides the illustrations for this volume.

If like me, Joyce has never made a blip on your reading, or pop culture radar screen, you can be sure in the coming months that will most definitely change. In late fall, THE RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, a Dreamworks film, will hit movie theatre screens around the world. Without a doubt new editions of all of Joyce's Guardian books will see heavy reprints stacked up tall on bookstore tables and airport kiosk stands. There will be action figures and probably fast food toys based on the characters.

I'll be collecting all that shit!

And it's because I love the epic nature of the universe that Joyce has, and still is, creating. It's highly imaginative and so full of magic and wonder.

Joyce is the brilliant mind behind the books and tv show Roli Poli Oli and George Shrinks. He had his hand in the creation of the characters for both TOY STORY and A BUGS LIFE. He was also one of the minds behind the movie ROBOTS.

And I haven't even scratched the surface of everything Joyce has produced in all these creative mediums.

NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND THE BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING is a book that will capture you and your kids imagination and thrill you through and through. It tells the story of Pitch, an evil dude that carries the title of the Nightmare King, because it is his passion in life to give nightmares to all the world and see it fall into darkness forever. Standing against Pitch is Tsar Luna (The Man in the Moon) and his protecter Nightlight, the wizard Ombric, Nicholas St. North (a brilliant thief and warrior) and little Katherine.

Many of the illustrations are from Joyce's children's picture book THE MAN IN THE MOON (GUARDIANS OF CHILDHOOD book one), but unfortunately only in black and white. However, this should only fuel your desire to seek out THE MAN IN THE MOON from your local bookstore or library.

NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND THE BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING is a sure bet, in my opinion, for all Wormies, young and old. Check it out today!

BRAVE

You'll love BRAVE.

If you are looking for a good movie to see this weekend, make it this one. I took the kids yesterday afternoon and I don't know who dug it more, me or them.

It's full of humour, adventure, magic and tons of action. It's fun and exhilarating. If the red headed princess Merida doesn't sweep you off your feet and charm you silly, then Fergus (her father) will crack you up, not to mention Merida's three rascally brothers who get up to lots of no good.

The other great aspect to the movie was it's wonderful soundtrack. I will definitely be downloading this one for it's absolutely beautiful songs!

10 out of 10. Pure family summer entertainment.

THE LEAF MEN (AND THE BRAVE GOOD BUGS)

THE LEAF MEN by William Joyce is another winner from the man that has brought us ROLI POLI OLI and GEORGE SHRINKS (not to mention the up and coming Dreamworks film THE RISE OF THE GUARDIANS).

Published in 1996, THE LEAF MEN tells the fantastical tale of some garden bugs that go on a dangerous journey to save their garden and the woman who tends to it. Filled with brave battles, an evil spider queen and magical creatures that come when called, this is a book that will surely spark your kids imagination around the garden.

Joyce is quickly becoming one of my favourite children's book authors, right up there with Chris Van Allsburg. It seems every story he writes plugs right into my imagination and lights up my mind with wondrous images of things I wish were and maybe just are!

Go to your library (or the local bookstore) and pick this one out.

FOUR QUICK CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEWS

IMAGINE A NIGHT and IMAGINE A DAY are the first two books in a trilogy of children's books wonderfully illustrated by Rob Gonsalves with words by Sarah L. Thomson.

These are great books to ignite your kid's imaginations and will surely have you discussing the cool illusions each picture holds like loosely held secrets.

I really enjoyed these books and hope Gonsalves and Thomson team up for more in the future. If you are looking for something great to check out of the library to read your children, these two (and IMAGINE A PLACE, the third book in the trilogy) are sure bets!

Cornelia Funke, author of the popular Inkheart trilogy of chapter books, has written several children's books, including THE WILDEST BROTHER. This is a charming and delightful book about a brother and sister and how his wild, monster fighting, imagination brings the two of them together. The book has one of the simplest, yet sweetest, endings I have ever read in a children's book. Check it out!

Lastly, David Wiesner's TUESDAY is a treat for the child in us all (and of course the child you will read it to!). TUESDAY is the award winning picture book about...hmmm, I think I'll let you discover that for yourself. In typical Wiesner fashion, TUESDAY is told nearly completely by his awesome illustrations.

If you are heading out to the library or your local bookstore today, any of these are sure to be popular with the kiddos.

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

I have been wanting to get a new tattoo for a long time. I think I'm totally copying badass Santa...

THE MAN IN THE MOON (The Guardians of Childhood)

Few things make me happier in this life than finding a new favourite author/artist to collect and enjoy.

My most recent discovery, hot on the heals of the wonderful David Wiesner (author of TUESDAY, FLOTSAM, ART & MAX) is an Academy Award winner and the genius behind such animated films as TOY STORY and ROBOTS and the television show ROLIE POLIE OLIE.

His name is William Joyce and man, does he have an incredible imagination.

I had never heard of William Joyce until I caught the trailer for next fall's release of THE RISE OF THE GUARDIANS. The trailer blew me away. Amazing looking animation, cool characters, a dark, villainous, foe for the heroes to battle and oodles of wonder and fantasy.

Click here to check it out!

It turned out the mastermind behind this intriguing story was William Joyce. Now, listen carefully, because this is not complicated, but different.

To start, the movie has it's origins in a picture book (illustrations and story by Joyce) called THE MAN IN THE MOON (The Guardians of Childhood). There is also a young readers chapter book called NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND THE BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING (book one of the Guardians of Childhood series). I'm reading the latter right now and loving it! It's full of terrific illustrations and the story itself is spectacular.

As far as THE MAN IN THE MOON goes, it's just breathtaking. The paintings (or illustrations...whatever you prefer) are so full of life and mesmerized this reader with their bright colours and wonderful energy. Both myself and my kids loved it!

I just crave these types of epic stories told for children and adults alike.

Don't just check this one out of the library. Buy this one. You'll want to read it over and over to your kids.

Coming in October is the second book of this great story. It's called THE SANDMAN: THE STORY OF SANDERSON MANSNOOZIE.

Look for a review of NICHOLAS ST. NORTH AND BATTLE OF THE NIGHTMARE KING soon!

PROMETHEUS

PROMETHEUS is dang awesome. If you are a fan of the Alien movie franchise and for some dang reason you are putting off seeing this movie, go now!

Drop what you are doing and just go.

I don't care if you are putting the kids to bed or barbecuing steaks in the back yard. Forget about that crap and go see PROMETHEUS.

I loved it. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. I wish I could un-see it for the first time and go see it again. It's an Alien geek's dream movie.

I don't have time right now to go into all the impressive things about the film. I have kids to put to bed and steaks to cook.

Just take my word for it and go see it tonight!

MADAGASCAR 3, EUROPE'S MOST WANTED

MADAGASCAR 3, EUROPE'S MOST WANTED is an hour and a half of belly jiggling fun. I loved it. My kids loved it.

Even if you don't have any children, go see it. It will make you laugh out loud and snort your Coke out your nose.

I know I have seen the other films in the series but I honestly don't remember if I enjoyed them quite as much as I did this one. Definitely worth the price of admission and the five bucks you'll inevitably spend renting it on iTunes in five months!

Oh yeah, and be prepared to have Chris Rock's voice in your head for the rest of the day singing Circus Afro da-da-dadda-da-da-datta! It's pretty catchy.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

I saw SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN last weekend and really enjoyed it.

If you have been following this blog of late then you know I'm not really in the mood for anything too deep. I want something to take me away for a few hours. Please just teleport me to another world that I haven't ever seen before.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN managed to do just that. The acting won't win any of the stars an Academy Award but they get the job done. The FX are what you would expect from a movie with witches and trolls and a dark forest.

Oh, and it's got the seven dwarves! What's not to love about that?

I did think it a little long, but what blockbuster movie doesn't go a few minutes into overtime these days?

About two thirds of the way through the film there was a particularly beautiful sequence involving fairies and a white stag that I found very cool (maybe because of my mood lately). Usually scenes like these would have me rolling my eyes and crying out for a monster or some bad guy to kill everyone. This time I allowed myself to enjoy the child-like beauty and just soak up the wonder of it.

If you like fairy tales and haunted forests, brave warriors and beautiful princesses, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN is just the movie for you.

WEEK ONE - STEPPING STONES

The room was about half the size of a normal school classroom and was slowly beginning to fill up with strange faces, some older, some younger but none of them familiar. On one wall was a half finished mural that struck me as a bad omen. I'm notorious for starting things and not finishing them (I'm thinking of the many novels and short stories I have enthusiastically begun only to quit part way through to work on another idea that has exploded in my head).

A hundred other negative connotations swept through my mind as I starred at this half finished river and woods.

I sat down in the corner and felt a tingle of anxiety.

Was this a big mistake? Did the doctor know what the hell he was doing referring me to this program?

God, I hoped so.

I won't bore you with details other than to say I believe this is EXACTLY where I need to be right now, and with the difficult circumstances I am facing in my personal life.

Being around some of these people with similar obstacles to overcome and life problems is a big comfort.

I don't feel as alone anymore.

I have met some really smart, caring and thoughtful folks, who have listened to me, heard my story without judging me and whom I already feel a bond.

The staff, the councillors, are great. Though I haven't had any 'one on one' with them yet, or been seen by any of the doctors, I can tell they have their hearts in their work and the people in the group mean a lot to them. This is very encouraging to me.

Some of the topics we covered include anger management, positive psychology and boundaries and finally how to deal with people who ask about our illness. The topics seem tailored and extremely relevant to my life and I have found positive information galore.

I am actually looking forward to Week 2, and what more I can learn that will help positively impact my life and emotions.

Two people graduated on Friday, receiving certificates to show they had completed the program. One man, who here I will call Brad, gave a very inspiring speech. Afterward, though I didn't really get a chance to meet and learn much about Brad, I went up and shook his hand and told him how much his words meant to me and how his words had lifted my spirit and gave me hope.

Wormies, I'm feeling much stronger and more positive.

I've lost a lot of weight by changing my diet and exercise. For the first time in years I'm below 200 pounds and I look great.

I also have a clear goal for my future, something I figured out durning an exercise in "visioning". It's not something radical that I haven't thought of before but the image has become much sharper in my mind, pin sharp.

I want to be a children's book writer and illustrator. I want to go around to schools and inspire kids to be creative and write and paint their own stories. I want to read them my own imaginings and see the looks of wonder and fascination light up their bright little minds.

Durning one exercise this week we were given a canvas, paint and a half hour to create something. Mine was to do with my visioning. Below is a picture of a monster's eyeball. I'll leave it up to you to imagine what the rest of him looks like.

Again, if you have read this far, thanks. I appreciate you.

If you are coming from a similar place, I hope you are getting support and are starting to feel better about your life, yourself and those around you.

THREE BOOKS BY DAVID WIESNER

I came across David Wiesner last week while browsing the children's book area of Amazon. It was actually a video for his book ART AND MAX. It was absolutely fascinating. I just had to get to the library and take some of Wiesner's books to read to my kids.

ART AND MAX is a really cool story about art and the different layers and mediums of art, wonderfully blended into a cute little story. Wiesner is definitely not one to waste words. You will quickly realize the illustrations are intended to tell much more story than the few words on the pages. And that's fine, because Wiesner is a fantastic illustrator, a master of colour and theme.

ART AND MAX is a beautiful book and one your kids will delight in.

Wiesner won the Caldecott Medal for FLOTSAM, a really cool book about a camera that washes up on the beach one day, and the pictures a little boy discovers on the film inside. FLOTSAM's story is revealed, like the story told by the pictures in the camera, completely by the illustrations. What you will discover is a magically unexpected journey under the ocean and back through time. Pick this one up!

The other book by Wiesner I took out was called SECTOR 7 and of the three books, was my least favourite, but still enjoyable. It's about a boy with a very creative talent and imagination that discovers a whole other world above the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Like the other two books, SECTOR 7 is filled with terrific illustrations and is worth taking out just for the art alone.

I'm looking forward to reading and enjoying more of David Weisner's children's books. Take the time to go to your library and check some of these out. You and your kids will enjoy them very much!
